Red Hair Colors - Considerations You Want to Know Before Going Red

Natural redheads are really rare. This is why so many women covet red hair colors and attempt to dye their hair. Many people are unsatisfied with the results because it is the hardest color to fake. There are too many shades in a natural redhead hair to get a good result from a bottle.

The problem is that many people take dye jobs into their own hands. This means they have probably picked up a bottle of dye at the grocery store - a bottle which was one of few other choices in terms of hue. It therefore will end up looking very awkward and unnatural, causing many women to dye their hair back. For the best results, you should see a stylist.

Of all the shades of red, strawberry blond is the worst when it is faked. The combination of red and blond almost always turns out to be a horrific, brassy orange. The reason for this is that redheads tend to have multi-colored strands of hair, changing when the light hits it. They have more than just high and low-lights like other hair colors.

One thing many people forget when they dye their hair is to dye their eyebrows as well. This is often an indicator of a faker. Few natural redheads have extremely dark eyebrows. Redheads have light eyebrows, so if yours are already blond, leave them. If yours are dark, try going slightly auburn. You will be amazed at how more realistic the rest of your hair looks if you do this. Just never dye your eyebrows the same shade of red as your hair.

Eyelashes are another way for people to tell if someone is faking their hair color. You can always get your eyelashes dyed at a salon, but it may just be easier to go for mascara of a different color than you usually get. Look up makeup specific for redheads--it is a growing market. You can then get dark auburn mascara which will look less harsh than black.

Keep in mind that your skin coloring has a great deal to do with how realistic the color looks. If you have pale skin, you are more likely to look natural with it. Pick a pale shade of red. In this case, you will be able to get away with wearing just about any shade. If you are darker or have heavy freckles, light red hair might look silly. Go more the russet route and stay away from red clothes.

Try it in stages if your hair is already dark. Get red highlights and if you like them, get more. Dark auburn is a way to sneak into being a redhead. Blonds, unfortunately, have to just go for it. Their hair could look orange if they got highlights, or the red could be extremely noticeable from the rest of their hair color. Try for something less intense your first few goes.

Professional Hair Salon Stylists and Services

Salon services are there for everyone. No matter what look you are trying to achieve, a professional hair salon can help you reach your goals. They have full lines of color products matched with years of experience in hair color and highlights. By either making an appointment or walking in, anyone can enjoy professional hair services.

Books are always available at salons to help guide consultations. Bringing any pictures along of the color you want or cut and style you want is always recommended. Using books and pictures to help show what look you want is a great way for the stylists to know exactly what you want. Communication is key and professional hair salons are trained to achieve the look that the customer desires. Of course, their professional view is always available if you want advice on which color or cut would be best for your unique skin tone and features. They are skilled with different cuts for all different lengths of hair. From men's cuts to bobs and long layers, stylists know how to compliment a jaw line and face shape best.

The real technique of the professionals is in their performance. Beyond being able to cut a variety of styles and lengths, they also have to know how to mix colors, highlights, toners and more. Knowing what solutions to mix to get the perfect color and shade is a learned process that continues to grow with experience. Being able to take dark colors to blonde without damaging the hair can be done by a professional hair salon. With your desired look and the condition of your hair in mind, they can safely decide how to take your hair where you want it to go.

At the salon you can also have treatments done to your hair. Conditioning treatments and masks can help strengthen your hair and restore its shine. This is great for those that use color, highlights, or use frequent heat when styling. Treatments and deep conditioners are also great for those that are trying to grow out their hair because they can help restore brittleness and prevent split ends.

Going to a professional salon is always recommended. Cutting, styling, coloring, and color mixing is difficult to do correctly if you are not a trained stylist. Not only are they educated in the craft but they have the experience to help any male or female that sits in their salon chair.

5 Steps to Winter Hair Care

The fall and winter season is upon us! There's so much to look forward to this time of year. School is back in session, the holidays are coming, maybe even snow to play in depending on where you live. I love the winter season. My hair and skin? Not so much. Between the dry, cold air outside and the heater running inside, my hair tends to get very dry and frizzy looking. There are some things you can do however, to help prevent this winter hair syndrome.

1. Shampoo your hair less frequently if you can get away with it. Also, always use a conditioner after shampooing your hair, and give your hair a final rinse in cold water. The cold water closes your hair shaft and adds shine.

2. Never brush your hair when it's wet. Always use a wide tooth comb.

3. Dry to avoid using blow dryers and curling irons as much as possible. If you absolutely can't live without these styling tools, then be sure and use a good moisturizer for your hair beforehand. Just be careful if you have fine hair, some leave-in moisturizers can weigh down your hair.

4. Limit the amount of chemical treatments you do to your hair as much as possible. Perming, chemically straightening and coloring your hair can really dry out your hair. If you can't wait all winter, then be sure to get any chemical treatments done at a professional salon. Avoid using home coloring kits.

5. Last, but not least, never go outside with wet hair. You may not catch pneumonia, as our moms always warned, but you will run the risk of hair breakage. Even if your hair is dry, it's a good idea to keep it covered with a hat or a scarf rather than letting it blow around in the cold wind.

Follow these 5 winter hair care tips will help keep those winter frizzies away! So get out there and enjoy the season!

Get Rid of Flyaway Hair This Winter Season

Well, flyaways are caused when hair strands pick up positive charges. These charges cause some strands to lift away from the rest of the hair so it's no longer in place but loosely "flying" away on its own. This can make for a bad hair day and a bad mood especially when you put the effort into making your hairstyle. Basically, you have lost moisture from your hair. It's common to have this happen due to the winter's dry air. Also, sometimes the heating in your home and workplace can dry out hair as well as static from clothing.

What to do?

Well, a great tip is carrying lotion in your purse. Lightly rub some lotion on your hands and smooth it onto the hair. Use very little - just enough to add a bit of moisture to your hair. Another good tip is before you style your hair make sure you use a leave-in conditioner on your hair as well as a bit of styling serum to give your hair a bit of moisture so it can withstand any dry air or static that it may encounter once you leave the house.

As you know, winter weather can wreck havoc on your hair so the only way to repel the evil demon of dry air is to use the right products. Follow these tips and say goodbye to flyaway hair!

Also look for products that provide moisture to the hair. This is extremely important especially for those with curly hair who want to avoid the frizzies. If you're shopping for hair products, buy products with the following ingredients coconut oil, wheat germ, keratin and/or jojoba, vitamins such as biotin, panthenol, vitamin A, E and essential oils. These ingredients work well with any hair type.

Hairstyle Ideas for Long, Straight Hair

2012 is going to be the year of great looking hairstyles whether your hair is long, short, curly or straight. But, if you are tired of the same boring look, try some of these hairstyle ideas for long, straight hair. There is a look out there for you to ensure that you look the best that you possibly can for this year.
  • Super Sleek: Bust out your straightening iron and get to smoothing out those frazzled tresses. This year try to keep it as smooth as possible with some frizz taming serum and a flat iron to get your locks at neat as possible. Parts down the middle and to the side are just as popular - just take a look at the celebrities!

  • A Simple Pull-Back: If you are having a day where it seems no matter what you do, your locks will not cooperate, then try pulling all of your hair back into either a bun or a high ponytail. You can leave some tendrils or bangs out of the bun to give it a less severe look. This is a great style at work - allowing you an easy change at the end of the day.

  • Au Naturel: Another great idea is to just go natural. Whatever the texture of your locks may be, just throw in some frizz easing serum or some control gel and get on with your day!

  • Braids: Braids are all the rage this year and will look fun but mature at the same time. You can do a French Braid, a half braid, a loose slung to the side braid or a messy braid. Anything goes with a braid.

  • Bangs: Bangs are a wonderful hairstyle idea for long, straight hair because it breaks up the heaviness of locks that are one length with an interesting frame for your face. You can opt for whimsical side-swept look or go all out with a bold horizontal bang.

  • Accessories: If you want to spice up your look without cutting it, adding accessories is a good hairstyle idea for long, straight hair. Pins look great as well as bands and flowers. Keep it light and fun and you can't go wrong.
There are plenty of great styles ideas for hair that is straight and long; and all it takes is for you to do some experimentation to find out what works for you. Step out of your comfort zone and you will be happy that you did!

Hot Short Hairstyles for 2012

A long time ago you would have thought that in order to have great hair, Hollywood celebrities would have to have long flowing locks. Recent years and fashion changes have made it so that short hair can be sexy as well. Some of the most famous celebrities will sport short hairstyles and grab the attention of all the cameras at the premiere or the red carpet. If you want to get your hairstyle based on what you see from celebrities, then here are a few ideas that will help you become hip and sexy while sporting short hair.
Jenna Elfman: The TV and movie actress has gotten her short hairstyle on the pictures of the tabloids now for a couple of years. Lately, her hairdo has been more of a casual look. It is tapered into her neck which gives the style shape. The jagged layers in Jenna's hairstyle cut through both sides and her back which achieves the best results. If you have a round face, then this hairstyle is perfect for you as it is also low maintenance with an average time between hair trims being four to six weeks. Thin or medium hair density is the best for this type of hairstyle.
Ashlee Simpson: Ashlee Simpson went from medium to long hair length to a shorter more casual hairstyle. The new hairdo makes Ashlee seem more sophisticated. This hairstyle is worn with one ear showing while the opposite side shows layers which gives the hairstyle shape. Women who have fine to medium hair density and do not want to use much product will benefit from Ashlee's hairstyle. It is a very low maintenance hairdo which takes about 10 minutes to style. One recommendation is to direct the hair into the right position at the same time that you are applying your finishing products or if drying.
Katherine McPhee: Katherine McPhee's hairstyle sits beautifully on her head. There is a combination of short and medium layers which add body to the hairstyles look and the back is tapered to the neck to add to the flair. If you have an oval, square, diamond or oblong face shape, Katherine's hairdo is perfect for you. It works best with hair density that is medium to thick. It does take some time to get it to look just right. On average, styling time should be around 30 minutes. If you want shine and hold on this hairstyle, all that you need to do is apply a very small amount of smoothing shine on the top.
Mandy Moore: Brunettes will have a lot of fun wearing Mandy Moore's hairstyle. Mandy has proven that the brunette look is a great look on her. This haircut has been razored and cut whispy into a short hairstyle and that compliments the youthful appearance of the singer. If you have a medium or coarse hair type then you should definitely try it. Women with oval, square, oblong, heart or diamond face shape will look perfect with this low maintenance hairstyle. It takes about 20 minutes to style your hair to look like Mandy's.

Our Top Tips For Managing Dry, Winter Hair

It happens ever year...the cold, dry arctic blasts bring frigid air and introduce that time of year we all have to deal with hard-to-manage dry, winter hair.
The lack of humidity, increased static from shedding and replacing clothing, and the dryness of conditioned in-door air makes controlling our hair difficult at best.
So, what is happening and what can be done?
By nature and physics, cold air is less dense that warmer air. It contains less water vapor and humidity and tends to dry-out our scalp and hair. This, combined with static created by taking on and off coats, hats, and scarves leads to fly-away, low moisture content, and an increase of damage from styling appliances like flat irons and blow dryers.
So, what can be done - here's our tips for controlling "winter hair"
  • Use a moisturizing shampoo - If your hair is naturally on the dry side, you may have already learned this trick. If not, you might consider for the winter. Moisturizing shampoos provide additional hydration to the follicle shaft (and scalp). The added moisture helps support the hair's shaft and improves thickness. This helps with control and resists dryness.
  • Avoid blow drying - Yes, I know, this is a big one, but allowing your hair to air-dry after combing with a wide-toothed comb can help a lot. The heat and dryness from a dryer makes it more difficult to style.
  • Use a leave-in conditioner - Available as lotions or sprays, a leave-in will provide daily conditioning while helping provide control and help lock-in hydration.
  • Gels & Mousse - If you use styling aids, light-hold gels can help provide control - generally better than hairspray. It may not work for all hairstyles - especially men - but the added control provides a bit of stiffness that helps fight static electricity.
  • Flat Irons - While this might seem somewhat contradictory, a good flat iron can help a lot if it works for your style. Newer, better models have tourmaline-infused plates and anti-static properties. When used with a thermal protector, you can help avoid heat damage and improve smoothness and control.
  • Styling - If you have long hair, you might consider pulling your hair back - in a ponytail or a bun. It might not be your preferred style, but it might be the best option during cold weather.
Low humidity, cold air and winding environments wreak havoc on the natural state of moisture content in our hair - making it difficult to control. These tips have helped - I hope they work well for you too!
