Tips for Choosing a New Hair Stylist

These days, it's harder to find the perfect hair stylist than it is to find the perfect partner. Placing the future of your hair into a stranger's hands is a hard thing to do but it almost seems like every time I find the right stylist, the one who knows exactly what I want, either retire or relocate. I know I can't be the only one who has this ongoing problem so here are a few tips on how to choose a new hair stylist.

Word of Mouth

The best way to find a new hair stylist, in my opinion, is by word of mouth. If you have a friend whose haircut or style you admire, ask them where they got it done. Ask your family members or the people you work with who they like to visit for their hair, and why. The next time you're waiting for a bus and you see someone with a great cut, ask them for pointers. These days everyone carries business cards and I'm sure you'll come across many. If someone is excited about something as fantastic as their appearance they will want to share it with you, even if you're a total stranger.

Social Media

Two words: Google it! If you've heard about a salon or think you might be interested in seeing your neighbor's stylist, look it up on the Internet. That's what it's there for, after all. Read reviews of their site and services on sites like Yelp. See what your friends have to say about any particular hair stylist on Twitter or Facebook. The Internet is a world of knowledge just waiting to be tapped into and serves to help people like us make the best decision based on other people's good and bad experiences.

Visit the Salon

Finally, if you're uncomfortable taking other people's word for it, check the salon out yourself. Schedule a consultation with the stylist you're thinking about trusting with the future of your hair and sit down with them for a minute to discuss what you want and what they think will suit you best. Bring in pictures of models or celebrities whose style you admire so you can show a visual of how you imagine yourself looking once the makeover is complete. If the stylist doesn't have the time to meet with you and take to slow, don't use their services. We can get very attached to our hair and if that person doesn't understand you then they're not worth your time.

Finding a new hair stylist takes time and preparation if you're going to do it right. You can't trust just anyone with knowing exactly what you want as a hair style but through word of mouth, social media, and in-person visits you are sure to find the right hair stylist for you. And with a little bit of luck, maybe you'll be able to convince them to stick around so you won't have to go through all the work of find that perfect stylist all over again!
