A Good and Healthy Hair Day. How To Keep Your Hair Healthy by Kristine Sagan

A Good and Healthy Hair Day. How To Keep Your Hair Healthy by Kristine Sagan of Knotty Hair Salon, as published in the March-May 2012 Issue of Solano Fit Magazine. (

Just like the money you  spend on your favorite outfit or pair of shoes, your hair deserves equal if not greater investment. Just think, it's the one part of your outfit you wear every day. In thirteen years of styling hair, I have see a lot of damage done to women's hair, but I have also learned ways to reverse damage by keeping it healthy. From using good products to getting regular trims here are a few considerations to making every day a good and healthy hair day.

1. Long Time No Trim

If you have ever asked yourself "How many months has it been since my last haircut?" follow this simple rule: schedule a cut every time the seasons change. Four haircuts a year will help to keep your hair healthy and stylish.

2. Speaking of Seasons

Always protect your hair from the elements, like heat and sun. Whether you blow dry or not you should always put something on your hair after you wash and condition. There are products for moisture, shine, smoothing or body building. Look for the right one for your hair type and check the ingredients for sunflower see oil/extract or benzophenone 4. These sunscreens can protect your hair from UV rays that can be drying or fade the color.

3. Squeaky Clean

After shampooing, does your hair feel squeaky clean? If it does, you have lost too much moisture. Try to avoid shampoos that contain laurel sulfates. Your conditioner should never have to do all the work. If you are using a shampoo that is stripping the moisture, a daily conditioner will not replace the moisture you need.

4. It Takes Time

Conditioner ingredients like Panthenol (Vitamin B5), Jojoba Oil, and Shea Butter will add moisture. Silk protein, Wheat Protein and Keratin will add strength. Remember to leave conditioner on your hair for a full 3-5 minutes so it has time to take effect.

5. The Shining

If you flat iron or curl your hair after blow drying it, you will need a shiner. Shiners create a protective barrier between the heat and the hair. Some shiners are silicone based to smooth the cuticle and add shine. Some can even cut down on drying time. Other shiners have Argan Oil which is an oil made from a tree native to Morocco. Argan Oil penetrates into the hair shaft to strengthen and repair the hair with vitamins, proteins and fatty acids. Argan Oil is also a natural sunscreen.

6. Too Darn Hot

Be careful of flat irons that have a dial. We tend to want to turn it all the way up. That is the fastest way to getting breakage and split ends. For fine to medium hair textures, the temperature should not exceed 375 degrees. For course hair don't go over 400 degrees.

7. Twice is Nice

To finish your hair and smooth any fly-aways use a shiner, pomade or hairspray. These should all contain a UV protectant too. For those who smooth curl, another good ingredient to look for is glycerin which resists humidity so your curl won't come back in wet weather. You'll need to shampoo twice to prevent build up: first to break down the products, and secondly to cleanse your hair.

8. You Deserve It

Using the best tools for you hair can make all the difference, especially when you are using heat often. I recommend investing in a good blow dryer. Ionic blow dryers work well. The ions shrink the water molecules to help the hair dry faster without using so much heat. My clients have also noticed less frizz after switching to ionic blow dryers.

Be sure to consult with a knowledgeable professional about the right products for you. Some salons will exchange the products they sell if they don't satisfy you. Make sure to check their policy.

Investing in yourself always feels good. And when it comes to your hair, using the right products will not only make it look and feel better, but also take some of the frustration out of getting ready in the morning. Remember, the difference between a good hair day and a bad hair day is in the products you use.

I know that when my hair looks good I feel better, walk taller and I don't mind bumping into an old friend in the grocery store. Make your hair the best thing you wear, so that everyday can be a good and healthy hair day!

Bob Hair Cuts

Bob hair cuts have been very poplar for the past decade. Many celebrities sport bob styles with confidence on the red carpet. Millions of women have followed in the lead, making it one of the most popular hairstyle of the century. Bob hairstyles give charming looks without any hassles. There are many types of bob haircuts. They include layered bob haircuts, short bob haircuts, medium bob, bobs with bangs, angled bob hairstyles and very long bob cuts. They look nice on people of all age, from little girls to elderly women. Some may say that they look very generic, but with different touches, they have a lot character.

Layered bob haircuts are very trendy right now. They suit anyone with straight hair. However, if you have wavy or curly hair, don't get a layered bob. Layers will make the hair look more puffy. Layered bobs are suitable for thin, straight hair. There are different kinds of layers. They include short, chopper layers to gentle, long layers. Short layers add volume while long layers add flow.

Traditionally, bob hair cuts were about chin length. Now, people are getting more experimental with bobs. Many people opt for short bob hair cuts. They look amazing on women with long necks and angular faces. They look very pixie like and cute. They also add a lot of grace to a person's appearance. They do not look good on people with square or round faces. Short bobs do require a lot of maintenance, such as frequent trimming. To make them look neat, blow drying and straightening are also recommended.

More and more people are considering fringes or bangs for their bob haircuts. Bangs hide large foreheads and strong facial structures. Depending on the style of the bang, it can also be original. Bangs vary in length and longer bangs can look like fringes. Fringes easily disguise asymmetry. They can be inconvenient, since frequent trimming is required. Celebrities like Rhianna and Emma Watson have bobs with bangs.

Long bob haircuts are very graceful. When they are cut properly, the hair is shiny and bounces with fluidity. They are the most suitable bob for people with curly or wavy hair. They also suit people with very round or flat faces.

The versatility of bob hairstyles makes the hairstyle very popular with people of all ages. They look nice and are appropriate for most occasions. That is why bobs are the most popular hairstyle of the season.

Primrose Everdeen Braids | Hunger Games Hairstyles

This hairstyle is very similar to our Soccer Braids tutorial except that this style uses two low French Braids that run closer to the hairline and curving around the ears rather than just down the back of the head.

These are the braids that Prim {Primrose Everdeen} wears in the District 12 scenes in the movie trailers.

Our hope is that all of you will wear some of these styles to when you go to the theaters to see the movie!

Katniss' Braid | Hunger Games Hairstyles

The hairstyle uses a Dutch Braid starting on the front of the right side of the head and braiding back across the head in a diagonal until you finish off the hair with a braid over the left shoulder.

{I have a perfect tutorial of how to do this type of Dutch braiding here...}

Now, this braid is supposed to look messy since Katniss was wearing this hairstyle in the arena during the games. I used a few hair extensions to add length to the braid, but my layers were perfect as some stuck out in the braid... just like Katniss!

Hairstyles for Round Faces

Ladies with round cheeks have a hard time picking a suitable hairstyle that will help them look slim. Sometimes, having a round face makes us look heavier than we actually are, and wearing the wrong hairstyle can exacerbate the problem. So it is of the utmost importance to pick the right hairstyles for round faces, in order to slim down the face and accentuate assets nicely. It is important, too, to know the basics of hairstyle for round faces so that you do not emphasize perceived flaws, such as plump cheeks.

Women with round faces are generally advised to consider hairstyles for long hair. This is because long hair will take gaze away from the roundness of your face. Layers and some side-swept bangs especially will show an illusion of more angles to your face. Longer, side-swept bangs will flatter your face shape.

Another really great cut for round faces is a mid-length cut with some layers. The layers set off your features beautifully, and give a softer look. A shorter hair cut, such as a bob, is considered a mistake for a round face. If you desire a shorter hairdo, try a bob which is longer toward the face, with the length going below the chin.

Women with round faces should also be careful of curly hairdos. Tight and extreme curls can further accentuate the roundness of your face. Go for curls that are soft and full. Should you have naturally curly hair in addition to a round face, make sure to ask for a haircut when your hair is dry, so that your stylist can make sure that the length will be longer than your chin. Invest in a professional who is an expert in cutting curly hair. You might also want to consider taming your curls with relaxers.

If you have a special event to attend, for example a wedding, there are a number of wedding hairstyles that will be perfect for a round face. Choose to leave your hair down with some loose curls, and just add some pretty hair accessories. Remember-- long or medium length hair elongates the face.

If you were blessed with a round face with less angular features, choose a hairdo for round faces, that will flatter your features. The guideline is to have it long or at least longer than the chin, and incorporate some layers to slenderize your face. Having the most flattering style will take away from the width of your face, and will make you look ten pounds lighter. So, who couldn't use a boost like that?

Matching Your Hairstyle to Your Wedding Gown

The perfect bridal gown deserves the perfect accessories, and that includes your hairstyle. With more necklines than ever available these days, it is easy for brides to get confused about which hairdos work best with which wedding gowns. This is an easy guide to help you match your hairstyle to your wedding gown for an unbeatable look.

One shoulder wedding dresses have become very popular in the last few seasons, and this very unique neckline calls for a carefully crafted wedding hairstyle. After all, if you wear your hair down over your shoulders, you will end up obscuring the one shoulder detail that makes the gown special in the first place. Hair should definitely be pulled off your neck when wearing a one shoulder bridal gown. A beautiful way to complement the asymmetrical neckline is with a soft chignon which is pulled off center to the opposite side of the single shoulder strap. It creates a pleasing visual balance to the gown and also ensures that your hairstyle will not hide the cut of the dress. Keep your bridal hair jewelry simple and modern with this style; a beautiful crystal brooch tucked into the chignon will be perfect.

Strapless gowns remain popular, and the openness of the neckline creates its own needs when it comes to a wedding hairdo. Soft waves cascading down over your shoulders will help to break up all that empty space and add a bit more coverage, especially for the wedding ceremony. For a more formal wedding, an updo piled high on the top of the head can also work well with strapless. Just be sure to wear a dramatic necklace to fill in the empty area between your bodice and chin, otherwise you will look naked in any close up pictures! A veil will also help to soften the look, and is always lovely for a formal wedding ceremony. Select bridal hair jewelry which complements the details on your strapless gown, as well as your necklace and earrings.

The traditional illusion neckline is a very demure and sweet style of bridal gown. A sheer fabric covers the shoulders, and adds a special detail to what otherwise could have been a standard strapless neckline. Some illusion dresses feature beading on the sheer portion, which will sparkle delicately over the skin. The perfect hairstyle for this gown can be a half up, half down 'do. It will allow the illusion neckline to show, while enhancing the feminine style of the dress. Of course, you don't want your hair to cover any details on your gown, so if your illusion bodice features beading, pull all of your hair up into a classic twist. A delicate double headband with crystal or pearl accents is an elegant accompaniment to an illusion gown.

Portrait neckline or off the shoulder wedding gowns are defined by the way they show off the bride's graceful shoulders. Therefore, it is a given that the wedding hairdo should lift the bride's hair up to allow her shoulders to show. A low braided bun or a faux bob (in which hair is pinned up very loosely) is a lovely style to wear with a portrait neckline bridal gown. The soft styles are not too severe and they will help to enhance the beautifully cut neckline of the dress. A cluster of hairpins tucked into the bun is the ideal bridal hair jewelry for this elegant wedding hairstyle.

In general, seek a wedding hairstyle which suits the style of your gown as well as the shape of the neckline. If your gown has a woodsy bohemian flavor, then a loose side braid would make sense, just as a sharp bob would be fantastic with a 1920s flapper inspired dress. When the wedding gown, hairstyle, and accessories all work together in harmony, the results will be nothing short of stunning!

Brow Waxing FAQs

Can Men Get Their Eyebrows Waxed?

Brow waxing just isn't for women these days. Women aren't the only ones who care about how they look and how they present themselves. More and more men are turning to brow waxing to help shape their eyebrows and to enhance their facial features.

Is Brow Waxing as Painful as Tweezing?

There is a little bit of pain with brow waxing. However, it is just a split second of pain when the hairs are pulled out. Tweezing is more painful because it is a much slower process and 1 hair is pulled out at a time. With waxing, all the hair is pulled out at one time.

How Does Eyebrow Waxing Work?

The eyebrows are first brushed, and then hot wax is placed onto the hair that is to be removed. A thin cloth material is placed onto the wax and pressed down. The cloth is removed with a swift movement and the hair is pulled out at the root. There may be some additional tweezing necessary to remove any stray leftover hairs. Trimming the remaining brow with scissors may also be necessary.

Where Can I Get My Eyebrows Waxed?

You can get your eyebrows groomed at your hair salon, spa or a specialty spa that specializes in hair removal.

How Much Does Brow Waxing Cost?

Pricing for waxing varies by location. An average price for getting your eyebrows waxed starts around $5 and can run up to $50. Higher priced salons and specialty spas can sometimes run a bit pricy. Location is also a factor. If you are living in LA or NYC, you will pay more than if you are living in Oklahoma.

What is The Difference between Brow Waxing & Eyebrow Threading?

Brow waxing is done by using hot wax to remove the unwanted hair and shape the eyebrow. Eyebrow threading is done using 2 strands of cotton thread. The thread is twisted together and runs across the eyebrow one row of hair at a time. As the threads pass over the hair it gets entwined in the threads and is removed as the thread moves across it. This process is done until the desired shape is achieved.

How Often do I Need to Have my Brows Waxed?

Most often brow waxing is needed to be repeated between 2-4 weeks. It all depends on how quickly your hair grows in, how dark it is, and how dedicated you are to looking your best.

Makeover Your Hair With Hair Extensions

Do you want more from your hair than the locks you were born with? If you want to makeover your hair, then hair extensions are a great way to achieve the look you do not have naturally. While the Hollywood boom is making hair extensions more mainstream, they have been around for a very long time. There are many salons offering the service but on the most experienced can give you true, top-notch service.

If you want to makeover your hair temporarily for a special occasion or long term until your own hair grows out, then you want to be sure you have your extensions done right by a qualified professional.

Here are some common reasons why people choose extensions:

· To increase the length of their hair
· To increase the thickness of their hair
· To cover balding spots

Extensions can be used on all lengths of locks to make it look longer. The very short can have long locks of 10"-20" and short, medium and long lengths can have extensions to make it longer.

If your hair is naturally thin or thinning due to age, health reasons or damage and breakage, you can also use extensions to fill out the thickness of your hair. You do not necessarily have to add any to the length of the hair. Instead, adding in hair extensions that are the same color and length of your existing hair will give you more body and depth to your existing hair.

Another option for extensions is to cover balding spots caused by thinning hair. However, if you are choosing hair extensions for this reason, you need to speak with a qualified professional in this type of hair extension service because improperly done extensions can increase balding in the person. You need to have your extensions installed correctly and you need to be sure you know how to care for them properly to prevent further loss.

Hair infusions will blend with your natural locks to look real and feel great when they are in. But if you want to get the most from them, you also need to be sure you can care for them properly and that you do not get lax in your hair care routine. Doing so can ruin your hair makeover and also cause permanent damage to your real locks underneath.

When you have your hair extensions done by a professional and you take care of them properly, they will help you to have beautiful hair for a lot time to come.

When you want a hair makeover, hair salon hair extensions can give you a brand new look.

Spring's Hottest Hair Trend: Feather Hair Extensions

The latest fashion trend for spring is Feather Hair Extensions. This is a beautiful, fast and fabulous way to add interest and style to your hair. Feather hair extensions vary in quality depending on the supplier, which in turn affects durability and looks. They are available in an array of colors that are easily and inexpensively applied to your hair to add subtle or dramatic highlights without damage or altering color.

Feather hair extensions are applied in minutes, using a completely safe and chemical-free technique that attaches a single silicone bead to a tiny section of hair. And because they come in an array of colors, there is no limit to the imagination or desired effect.

The consumer should enquire as to the type and make of feathers as the variances are significant. Some feathers are made to last, will not fatigue under styling conditions; can be washed, dried, flat-ironed or curled. Quality feathers can stay in hair for up to 8 weeks, and a few specific types of feathers will last a lifetime and can be used over and over again without losing integrity or luster. These interesting hair accessories can be cut, just like ordinary hair, and are available in a broad range of patterns, colors and lengths ranging from eight to sixteen inches. The quality feathers are available through licensed hair stylists and salons as opposed to being available at you neighborhood drug store etc.

Feather hair extensions were developed in the creative mind of a hair stylist through her unique expression of style and love for the art of hair. Unlike traditional hair extensions, which can actually damage the health of your hair, these feathers attach in a low-impact and non-permanent fashion. This concept that created the method of attaching individual feathers with a silicone-lined microbead, which ensures no damage to the hair is a recent innovation. It is not only easy on your hair but are both simple to install and remove.

The revolutionary packaging enables hair stylists to individually pick and choose feathers from an array of 40+ colors and patterns. The stylist can decide the exact location of each feather for the specific hairstyle.

You may have already seen a variety of male and female celebrities sporting these feather extensions, including Hilary Duff, Taryn Manning and Steven Tyler. Suitable for every age these beautiful additions to your hair will add the flare and statement for the new season.

Beware of quality when choosing your feathers and hopefully know that a quality salon should be choosing quality extensions, which will last for a long time and look exceptionally stunning. Expect a fairly low price point for these feather extensions -- usually about $30 or so for a small group of feathers placed close together. Additional feathers priced from around $10 each. Fitting time takes minutes. Take care while combing and brushing your hair -- feathers may become loosened if they become caught in a brush or other styling tool. Otherwise, style, wash and have fun as usual. When you hair grows, the bead can be re positioned back up into the hair, again a matter of minutes.
