Knotty Hair Salon Attends Specialty Class: Braids & Balayage

I just attended a Braids and Balayage Class on August 31st in Sacramento held at Space07 Salon.

This was a hands-on, see-and-do teaching session, put on by educators Jenny Strebe of Confessions of a Hairstylist, and Jay Wesley Olson, owner of Bespoke Salon.  This class caputres todays hottest trends of braiding while accentuating and bringing to life the color with the art of balayage.

In part one, the class went over the basic strokes of balayage and introduced the single, double, and triple point techniques.

In part two, after a recap of what was learned in part one, this part  taught the "Mohawk" section of balayge. Then went into more depth using different saturation techniques within the part. We also learned reverse balayage techniques, or shadow low lighting, which will achieve the perfect leave in color.

I learned a lot from this class that will help us to keep on the cutting edge of hair styling. Many of us attend several classes each year to stay up with changes in our industry and to serve our clients with the best that we can offer. -- Emily Giangrasso, Owner of Knotty Hair Salon

A Bit Of History At The Knotty Hair Salon

A Bit of History...

Prior to the stock market crash of 1929, business in Suisun was booming.

Local historian Jerry Bowen cites a 1925 edition of the River News, which noted that Suisun City's prosperity at the time was evident by the success of its banks. Specifically, the Bank of Suisun, which in 1925 had more than 10 times its original capital stock of $100,000 in its vault.

Founded by R.D. Robbins on February 7, 1876, the Bank of Suisun was the town's first bank and Robbins oversaw its growth as president until his death in 1919. The bank's first location was 607 Main Street.

By 1927, the bank was ready for a new home. It found it, a few doors down on the corner of Main and Sacramento Streets.

According to The Heritage Collection, a historical book on Fairfield-Suisun sites and structures, the building was built on the site of the Rummelsburg Dry Goods Store. Typifying the Mediterranean style of the 1920s and 1930s, it was designed with high-arched windows, a low-pitched tile roof, stucco surface walls, and a rectangular floor plan.

Today, some 85 years later, these same architectural features can still be found at 601 Main Street. Paint may have given the exterior a brand new look, but the basic design of the historic 1927 building remains perfectly preserved as Old Town glamour. Fittingly so, since these days Knotty Hair Salon is what buzzes with commerce there.

New owners Justin and Emily Giangrasso set up shop at the corner of Main and Sacramento in 2009, converting the building into a modern beauty salon with vintage touches. Customers can take a step back in time with a visit. The lather room, for example, is built inside the Bank of Suisun's old vault - complete with the original bank doors.

5 Questions You Must Ask Your Hair Stylist

So you managed to finally find a hair stylist that you like. He or she knows not only your hair type and preferences, but probably your favorite drink, your opinion on Tom and Katie, and that your co-worker is cheating on her husband. It may seem impossible, but you can further improve the relationship with your stylist, as well the quality of your hair, by asking just a few simple questions.

1. How should I maintain my hair at home and which products should I use?

After cutting your hair the first time, your stylist has a pretty good idea of your hair texture and tendencies. If you have gone over pictures together, he or she knows the desired outcome of your hair. With this in mind, your stylist will be able to tell you how to get the look at home and which products to use. Most times, the products are sold directly at the salon or you can even browse online for a discount.

2. I'd like to go for a new look. Which cut do you think would suit me?

A stylist can become bored with creating your hair style, just as much as you can become bored looking at it, especially if you have been going to the same one for a long time. Discuss this issue in a diplomatic way, explaining that you'd like a new look and are seeking their counsel. Talk to your stylist about what image you'd like to convey and it always helps to bring pictures for clarity.

3. How can I change my look without changing the cut?

Variety is the spice of life and hair is no exception! You may love your salon look because it gives off a professional feel perfect for the office. But how about those Friday nights when you fee like vamping it up? Ask your stylist to introduce you to the multiple facets of your cut. If he or she did the job right, you should be left with hair that's versatile enough to pull off a few styles within the same cut.

4. When is your least busy time for an appointment? What time is your first available appointment?

As you can imagine stylists get very busy, so it is important to be considerate and schedule your appointment in advance. If you would like a consultation in addition to a hair cut, also mention this. Like everyone else, stylists get tired. It is helpful to come in on their least busy day or to be one of their first appointments.

5. Could you put some of the hair dye you used in my shampoo to keep my color lasting longer?

No matter how much you love your colorists, you don't want to see them often for touch-ups. A little known secret is to add some of the dye used on your hair to a daily shampoo. This will keep your color lasting longer until your next appointment. A few drops is all you need and most stylists do not have a problem doing this, especially if your purchase a shampoo from the salon.
