Why You Should Consult Your Stylist Before Correcting Your Hair Color

Color correction usually implies that the current color that you are stuck with needs to be fixed. Maybe you need a complete makeover that changes your entire look all together. This is why you should consult your stylist before correcting or changing your hair color.

There are two mistakes that people often make when coloring their own hair: 1) not consulting with a color specialist and 2) attempting to fix the problem themselves. Lets say, for example your color came out too blonde. It may seem like an easy fix to apply a light brown or medium blonde over the whole head; however porosity of the hair plays a big role in how the hair absorbs color.

As an example, when the underlying tone of the color you are using is not known, covering it with a new color could change your roots to orange leaving your ends transparent or white. When hair has been colored too dark, trying to lift a dark brown or black out to reach a natural looking color is nearly impossible to do on your own. The color needs to be gently removed first. Then, the porosity of the hair has to be taken into account so that when applying new color the ends match the roots.

There are seven levels of orange and reds that the hair has to go through before achieving a natural result. These are just a couple mishaps that can happen when attempting your own color correction. If in doubt, schedule a consultation with your favorite color specialist for suggestions on what would be the most beneficial process for your hair type.

After correcting your color, you will also need reconstruction treatments to replace moisture to your hair. Anytime hair molecules are switched around there is always damage done. The real damage comes into play when you are lifting dark color out, as mentioned before, there are many levels to get through before you are out of the lovely range of orange. You can buy reconstructing treatments over the counter, but it is better to consult with a stylist. This is because some treatments are protein based which may dry out already dry hair.

Making sure you are receiving the best conditioner that is balanced with moisture and proteins will help your hair heal in no time. Before making a decision to go through with a color correction, make sure you both agree on the cost because it can get very expensive. That way you know what to expect and your stylist can work with you on price and the best color decision for your hair.

After the color correction is achieved and everyone is very happy with the result, maintenance is a must. What I mean is you need to baby your hair for a while. Use high-end products on your hair; something that is color safe and has UV protection. When using a blow dryer or other styling tools, apply a leave-in conditioner before styling. In addition, if your hair is fine, a volumizing cream or gel will provide some protection from excessive heat.

If you have chosen a red color, know that reds fade fast especially if hair is damaged. When rinsing hair, be sure to rinse with very cool water this will help the cuticle lay flat holding in color and keeping the hair shiny. Finally, in order to leave hair looking healthy, add in a light dry oil or anti-frizz serum.

Gold Leaf Hair Tutorial | Beauty Junkie

Would you put gold leaf in your hair? After seeing this hair trend all over Instagram, we felt compelled to give the look a go for ourselves. And while it's a fa-la-la worthy way to show off your holiday cheer, we have to admit it's not for the impatient.

The trick to keeping the gold leaf in place is to use gel. Paint it where you'd like it to apply it, then use tweezers to adhere the gold leaf itself. And try different metallic shades, depending on your hair color: bronze, copper and silver look gorgeous as well.

Truth be told, it can err on the side of aluminum foil, so be sure you're not using pieces with jagged edges. The good news is that if this style isn't for you, all your have to do is brush it out and grab a metallic hair accessory.

6 Necessary Tips You Need to Maintain Your Edges | Beauty Junkie

The edges of your hair are the most fragile part — they're very thin, which means taking the time to give them extra TLC. If you think you're alone in the struggle against thinning edges, think again — even supermodel Naomi Campbell deals with it!

If you're reading this, you know that thinning edges are caused by excessive pulling and tugging; tight ponytails and buns are not your friends. Weaves also put a lot of stress on your edges, as do many of the products you could be putting into your hair.

If you are trying to grow back your edges, are hoping to grow them out, or just want to maintain healthy edges, there are a few things to keep in mind. Avoid products with alcohol for starters — alcohol is used to help products you put in your hair dry faster and is found in a lot of gel products, but they can cause major breakage! It might be tempting to gel down your edges, but avoid doing so if possible. (Your hair will thank you!)

7 Easy Hairstyles For Curly Hair | Beauty Junkie

Curly hair is a godsend. Sure, you might not think that all the time, but curly hair has so many benefits! Like natural volume, which adds a certain whimsy to any hairstyle. With braids, you'll never have to worry about them being flat — the curls add bulk that many straight-haired women load up on styling powder for. And topknots are never, ever puny with curls!

Because we wanted to show off how versatile curly hair is, we recruited celebrity hairstylist Richard Collins, whose clients include Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, and Helen Mirren, to create these seven gorgeous looks that any curly girl can replicate at home — a look for every day of the week!

In terms of products you'll need on standby, Richard suggests something to tame frizz and keep your mane controlled. Schwarzkopf curling cream is his favorite. "It's also light. You don't want anything too heavy on curly hair, or any hair, really."

So what advice does Richard have for those who have curly hair? "A lot of people with curly hair want it straight. Try not to flat iron it too much; try not to use a curling iron too much. Definitely use something with a heat protector in it." And in terms of washing your hair, Richard suggests washing your curls every fourth day. "And I think you can get away with not using shampoo. Sometimes you can get away with just using conditioner. You need to use shampoo, but it's not necessary every single time. I think it's a mistake that people use it every single time. Unless you're Spinning or something. In between, try to use conditioner," says Richard.

Choosing Your Wedding Hairstyle - What You Should Remember

As a bride you definitely want to look your best and all eyes will be on you all through the day. To look gorgeous from head to toe is a must and your hair is one of those things you should take seriously besides choosing a great looking gown. There are long lists of best bridal hairstyles and remembering a few things can help you make the right decision with your wedding hairstyles.

Match the hair with the gown

This is one of the most important things if you do not want to end up looking as though your hair is competing with the gown. Striking a match between the two is what you should focus on. If you have a modern chi dress, select a sleek blow out or hold your hair back. For a gown that has a country look or peasant dresses and high waist frocks choose curls for your hair and you can add tiny flowers to complete the curly look. Dramatic up dos on the other hand can turn out great for big ball gown type of dresses. Whatever you choose should match with the type of dress you have selected. The tip here is to choose your dress first before then finding the perfect hairstyle.

The length of your hair matters

This is something most brides forget even though it is very important. Some styles are best for long hair while others are more suitable for short hair. Wedding hairstyles for short hair are more popular, but you can also rock your wedding with amazing wedding hairstyles for long hair. For short locks, a mini barrette and a pixie make very good chic and simple wedding looks but the choices are numerous. For longer locks, buns, barrettes and petals are some amazing ideas. Your hairdresser can come in handy in giving you choices depending on the length of your hair. Fashion magazines can also be helpful sources for any length of hair.

Remember the veil

Apart from making sure that your wedding hairstyle matches with the dress, also remember the veil and how suitable the hairstyle is going to be for your veil. If you have chosen a style whose charm is lost under the veil, you can consider wearing fascinators which are back and trending. There are also fancy short bridal hats that can be worn but make sure that you choose the veil before you go for the hairstyle to keep limits at bay.

Understand your hair type

This is very important because even the simplest hairstyles look great on particular hair types. Very short hair or hair that is very fine can be tricky to work with but there are styles that best suit this kind of hair. Same goes for curly hair, which can be tricky to straighten and make skinny. Know which hairstyles your hair will hold without problems. You should actually consider booking a trial with your hairdresser to help make a great choice beforehand.

There are lots of easy wedding hairstyles and a good hairdresser should be able to help you make a good decision. Not all wedding hairstyles will look great on you so try several before settling for the best.

Hair Color Correction

Getting your hair colored is one of the most sought after things these days, primarily because of the shine and shimmer it adds to dull, lackluster locks. It is in fact, the easiest way to cover gray and change the way you look. However, the experience can be disastrous as well, if not done under the guidance of hair experts. Several beauty salons are frequented by people who have had unpleasant experience with hair colorations and want color corrections.

Color correction, as the name suggests, corrects the hair color and gives you that stunning look which you always have desired. Most hair experts are of the view that color correction can best be done within three days of hair damage. However, you always have the option of visiting the beauty salon nearest to you to get the color correction done. Bare in mind, you may be required to visit the hair salon several times, if the hair has been greatly damaged.

If you have recently had your hair colored and it is just not suiting your style, you can go for hair color remover, but make sure that you do this in a hair salon only or else you might end up having brassy and even more damaged hair. Only a professional at a beauty salon can help you have the hair color you desire.

If you just have had highlights done, and they are lighter than what you expected, you may ask your hair salon expert to use a hair toner. On the other hand, if the highlights are darker than what you had envisioned, you would have to re-color your hair. One thing you should bear in mind while getting your hair colored again is that use of a good, color enhancing conditioner can prevent further hair damage.

The perplexities associated with experimenting with hair at home result in hair disasters which apparently have no solution but to seek advice from your beauty salon expert.

Tips for Choosing a New Hair Stylist

These days, it's harder to find the perfect hair stylist than it is to find the perfect partner. Placing the future of your hair into a stranger's hands is a hard thing to do but it almost seems like every time I find the right stylist, the one who knows exactly what I want, either retire or relocate. I know I can't be the only one who has this ongoing problem so here are a few tips on how to choose a new hair stylist.

Word of Mouth

The best way to find a new hair stylist, in my opinion, is by word of mouth. If you have a friend whose haircut or style you admire, ask them where they got it done. Ask your family members or the people you work with who they like to visit for their hair, and why. The next time you're waiting for a bus and you see someone with a great cut, ask them for pointers. These days everyone carries business cards and I'm sure you'll come across many. If someone is excited about something as fantastic as their appearance they will want to share it with you, even if you're a total stranger.

Social Media

Two words: Google it! If you've heard about a salon or think you might be interested in seeing your neighbor's stylist, look it up on the Internet. That's what it's there for, after all. Read reviews of their site and services on sites like Yelp. See what your friends have to say about any particular hair stylist on Twitter or Facebook. The Internet is a world of knowledge just waiting to be tapped into and serves to help people like us make the best decision based on other people's good and bad experiences.

Visit the Salon

Finally, if you're uncomfortable taking other people's word for it, check the salon out yourself. Schedule a consultation with the stylist you're thinking about trusting with the future of your hair and sit down with them for a minute to discuss what you want and what they think will suit you best. Bring in pictures of models or celebrities whose style you admire so you can show a visual of how you imagine yourself looking once the makeover is complete. If the stylist doesn't have the time to meet with you and take to slow, don't use their services. We can get very attached to our hair and if that person doesn't understand you then they're not worth your time.

Finding a new hair stylist takes time and preparation if you're going to do it right. You can't trust just anyone with knowing exactly what you want as a hair style but through word of mouth, social media, and in-person visits you are sure to find the right hair stylist for you. And with a little bit of luck, maybe you'll be able to convince them to stick around so you won't have to go through all the work of find that perfect stylist all over again!

5 Tips to Prolong the Life of Your Hair Extensions

You Get What You Pay For

Honestly, we've all heard the phrase before: "You get what you pay for." Well, hair extensions are no exception. The higher quality the hair, the longer your hair will look luscious, beautiful, and full. Choosing the right stylist is also very important. Many hair stylists know different techniques and have different strengths when it comes to installing the hair. Make sure the one you choose knows how to work with your hair texture, the hair extensions, and the method you want to install them with. If you decide to color your hair, make sure to work with the same stylist who will ensure that your hair matches the hair extensions.

Avoid Products With Alcohol

Alcohol dries out your hair! Many of the drug store and beauty supply store brand shampoos, conditioners, and styling aids come with alcohol on the label. Be very wary of any product labels mentioning ethanol alcohols. There are a few alcohols that will actually condition your hair instead of drying it out, such as cetyl alcohol or benenyl alcohol. Usually derived from a coconut or a palm tree, these types of alcohols are usually in a sold, thicker form. All in all, be very careful of what products you're putting into your hair extensions.

Treat Your New Hair Like It's Your Own

Don't be afraid to give your hair a conditioning treatment or style the hair extensions with the same care you'd use on your own hair. Air-dry as often as possible and use low heat when styling to avoid heat damage. Brush your locks at night before bed and in the morning before and after showering.

Satin Is Your Friend

Whether it's a satin pillow or a satin cap, you need one for sleeping in a night. During the night, our sleep movements against other materials like cotton cause friction that damages the hair creating tangles. Avoid this by wrapping your hair up in a satin cap or choosing to use a satin pillow case. If you're want to be extra cautious, use both! The plus side is you'll feel like royalty as you sleep on satin.

Professional Maintenance & Upkeep

Seek a professional hair stylist who will not only install the hair extensions for you but also maintain them during the life of your new hair. The kind of hair extensions you choose will depend on what kind of maintenance you need but overall, you should seek professional help in order to get the maximum life out of your hair extensions.

So those are our ways of keeping your the modern marvel of your hair extensions in it's ultra fabulous condition. Have any more friendly tips? Leave a comment below and share your knowledge!

Knotty Hair Salon Attends Specialty Class: Braids & Balayage

I just attended a Braids and Balayage Class on August 31st in Sacramento held at Space07 Salon.

This was a hands-on, see-and-do teaching session, put on by educators Jenny Strebe of Confessions of a Hairstylist, and Jay Wesley Olson, owner of Bespoke Salon.  This class caputres todays hottest trends of braiding while accentuating and bringing to life the color with the art of balayage.

In part one, the class went over the basic strokes of balayage and introduced the single, double, and triple point techniques.

In part two, after a recap of what was learned in part one, this part  taught the "Mohawk" section of balayge. Then went into more depth using different saturation techniques within the part. We also learned reverse balayage techniques, or shadow low lighting, which will achieve the perfect leave in color.

I learned a lot from this class that will help us to keep on the cutting edge of hair styling. Many of us attend several classes each year to stay up with changes in our industry and to serve our clients with the best that we can offer. -- Emily Giangrasso, Owner of Knotty Hair Salon

A Bit Of History At The Knotty Hair Salon

A Bit of History...

Prior to the stock market crash of 1929, business in Suisun was booming.

Local historian Jerry Bowen cites a 1925 edition of the River News, which noted that Suisun City's prosperity at the time was evident by the success of its banks. Specifically, the Bank of Suisun, which in 1925 had more than 10 times its original capital stock of $100,000 in its vault.

Founded by R.D. Robbins on February 7, 1876, the Bank of Suisun was the town's first bank and Robbins oversaw its growth as president until his death in 1919. The bank's first location was 607 Main Street.

By 1927, the bank was ready for a new home. It found it, a few doors down on the corner of Main and Sacramento Streets.

According to The Heritage Collection, a historical book on Fairfield-Suisun sites and structures, the building was built on the site of the Rummelsburg Dry Goods Store. Typifying the Mediterranean style of the 1920s and 1930s, it was designed with high-arched windows, a low-pitched tile roof, stucco surface walls, and a rectangular floor plan.

Today, some 85 years later, these same architectural features can still be found at 601 Main Street. Paint may have given the exterior a brand new look, but the basic design of the historic 1927 building remains perfectly preserved as Old Town glamour. Fittingly so, since these days Knotty Hair Salon is what buzzes with commerce there.

New owners Justin and Emily Giangrasso set up shop at the corner of Main and Sacramento in 2009, converting the building into a modern beauty salon with vintage touches. Customers can take a step back in time with a visit. The lather room, for example, is built inside the Bank of Suisun's old vault - complete with the original bank doors.

5 Questions You Must Ask Your Hair Stylist

So you managed to finally find a hair stylist that you like. He or she knows not only your hair type and preferences, but probably your favorite drink, your opinion on Tom and Katie, and that your co-worker is cheating on her husband. It may seem impossible, but you can further improve the relationship with your stylist, as well the quality of your hair, by asking just a few simple questions.

1. How should I maintain my hair at home and which products should I use?

After cutting your hair the first time, your stylist has a pretty good idea of your hair texture and tendencies. If you have gone over pictures together, he or she knows the desired outcome of your hair. With this in mind, your stylist will be able to tell you how to get the look at home and which products to use. Most times, the products are sold directly at the salon or you can even browse online for a discount.

2. I'd like to go for a new look. Which cut do you think would suit me?

A stylist can become bored with creating your hair style, just as much as you can become bored looking at it, especially if you have been going to the same one for a long time. Discuss this issue in a diplomatic way, explaining that you'd like a new look and are seeking their counsel. Talk to your stylist about what image you'd like to convey and it always helps to bring pictures for clarity.

3. How can I change my look without changing the cut?

Variety is the spice of life and hair is no exception! You may love your salon look because it gives off a professional feel perfect for the office. But how about those Friday nights when you fee like vamping it up? Ask your stylist to introduce you to the multiple facets of your cut. If he or she did the job right, you should be left with hair that's versatile enough to pull off a few styles within the same cut.

4. When is your least busy time for an appointment? What time is your first available appointment?

As you can imagine stylists get very busy, so it is important to be considerate and schedule your appointment in advance. If you would like a consultation in addition to a hair cut, also mention this. Like everyone else, stylists get tired. It is helpful to come in on their least busy day or to be one of their first appointments.

5. Could you put some of the hair dye you used in my shampoo to keep my color lasting longer?

No matter how much you love your colorists, you don't want to see them often for touch-ups. A little known secret is to add some of the dye used on your hair to a daily shampoo. This will keep your color lasting longer until your next appointment. A few drops is all you need and most stylists do not have a problem doing this, especially if your purchase a shampoo from the salon.

We Tried Needlepoint For Your Hair — and It's Awesome

When we reported on Bleach London's hair tapestry last year, our Pinterest blew up with repins. Intrigued by their creation, it was time to take matters into our own hands — so weave we did.

Hair tapestry is, essentially, needlepoint for your hair. It's a lot of fun, and truth be told, and it's a therapeutic, too. (They should provide the activity at wellness treats.) We paired up again with our cronies at Mane Addicts, who brought in Michelle Borbolla of The Gypsy Bazaar. Michelle mastered the technique, and told us a few tricks too. First being: doing this on your own hair, unless it's down to your navel, is a bit difficult. So grab a friend, or use the ease of a clip-in extension — especially when going with an intricate design.

So the last thing you want to worry about is whether or not your desired hairstyle works with the type of veil you want to wear or vice versa.

Natural Hair - 7 DIY Ideas! (Tutorial)

When planning this natural hairstyle tutorial, we knew we had to recruit the hair mavens at Mane Addicts to help us find the master in natural styling. And they delivered! Celebrity hairstylist Cesar Ramirez glams up performers like Ciara, Jennifer Hudson, and Kelly Rowland, and when we tasked him with creating seven easy to DIY natural hair looks — one for every day of the week — he nailed it.

These looks can be tailored to any natural hair length — it's not about how big or how long the hair is. It's all about showing off the texture of your hair. "It's not about it being too superpolished or too sleek or overly product," says Cesar. "You can do it in 10-15 minutes on dry hair, on the second or third day, and you don't want to wash your hair because you are going out or have somewhere to go. It's more about texture than length or trying too much," says Cesar.

The Benefits of Getting Your Hair Done by a Hair Salon

With the current state of the economy, many women are looking to save money wherever they can. This often means clipping coupons for their favorite grocery products, learning to change their own tires, and carpooling for work and school. However, one thing that women should not try to cut corners with is their haircare.

Here are 4 great reasons to get your hair done at a professional hair salon:

1. Professional hair stylists know what products to use to make your hair look its best. Many women have damaged their hair by using the wrong kinds of color, relaxers and other products. Others may have split ends, or damage from heating their hair with blow dryers and curling irons. A hairdresser may have products on hand that will help to repair this damage, as well as to help protect your hair from future mishaps.

2. A professional hair stylist can help you find a look that works for your facial type and personality. Let's face it, the style that you wore in high school tends to get a little old once you hit thirty. Also, while Halle Berry may be able to pull off the latest short style, if your face is square it may not look as fabulous. A hair dresser will be able to find a style that matches your face and personality while keeping you abreast of the newest styles and helping to keep your look from becoming dated.

3. Your look is almost as important as your resume. When it comes to landing a great job or moving up in the company that you are already a part of, looking the part goes a long way towards letting potential employers know that you are prepared for success. Getting your hair done professionally shows that you care about details like your appearance enough to not cut corners by doing things yourself that can be done better by someone else.

4. Getting your hair done at a hair salon helps you save time. Many women shave about 30 minutes to an hour off of their daily prep time when getting ready for work just by having a style that is low maintenance and that can last at least a week between sessions.

As they say, the hair is a woman's crowning glory. Mess with anything else, but not the hair. Do not take chances and get your hair done at a professional hair salon.

David Douglas Hair Salon Provo professional stylists have the talent and skill it takes to find the style that is perfect for you and to execute cutting-edge styling techniques to help you achieve that look.

How to Create Glamorous Waves vs. Beachy Waves With an Iron

When it comes to creating wavy hair, it's easier said than done. There are plenty of hacks: sleep in braids, scrunch your hair, use a beach-wave spray. But if your hair is straight as a board, you're going to need heat to keep your waves intact.

Plus, not all waves are created equal! Polished, sleek, Old Hollywood waves are perfect for work, taking meetings, or a fancy night out, while beach waves are the perfect "I'm carefree and fabulous!" daytime look or — if you're like me — create a sexy, edgy look with texture for a night of dancing.

There are a few tricks to mastering each look and a few products you'll need by your side, too. Check out how to get both of these full-range wave looks in this quick tutorial.

For a telephone consultation, you can contact me by email or phone. Visit my homepage for contact information. Priscilla Williams is a hair stylist and color specialist in the Portand, Oregon metro area. For more information on color and hair tips, click here [http://priscillarwilliams.com/].

How to Control Frizzy Hair in 7 Ways

Only those with frizzy hair know the envy of seeing someone with tame, manageable hair passing right by. Why couldn't we be blessed with good hair like virtually everybody else on the planet? Just think about all the different styles we could try - if they would just do as they're told. But they don't.

Fortunately for us, not all hope is lost and we can someday achieve sleek-looking hair ourselves. All we'll have to do is to dutifully adopt a few practices when caring for our frizzy, beloved hair.

Here are 7 ways that will help bring us closer to hair happiness, and perhaps make the decision to let our hair down a much easier one.

How to Control Frizzy Hair

Hydrating shampoo: Using a shampoo that hydrates and repairs will make it better adjusted to the humidity outside, which causes hair to frizz. That said, shampooing should be limited to once every two days or even less frequent in order to let the natural oils in your hair to condition your scalp.

Moisturizing conditioner: If you have frizzy hair, you cannot do without a conditioner! Most conditioners have dimethicone, which is a type of silicone known for coating hair, conditioning and giving you a great shine. Leave your conditioner on for at least five minutes before rinsing. Be sure to occasionally use a clarifying shampoo alongside it to get rid of any buildup.

Serum: Silicone also exists in styling serums which can do wonders to even the most uncontrollable hair. Apply this onto clean, wet hair for better application and absorption. Putting it on dry hair can make hair greasy instead.

Blow-dryer: Although frequent blow-drying and on high heat can cause hair damage in the long run, blow-drying generally can reduce frizz. Air-drying hair will absorb humidity and thus, cause hair to frizz. Therefore, be smart about blow-drying, and do it until your hair has completely dried.

Good brush: One brush that's good for frizzy hair is the boar bristle brush, which smoothens and straightens hair. It also adds volume to it! Be sure to use this when blow-drying your hair.

Hot oil: A weekly oil treatment such as one with Jojoba oil can make hair cuticle stronger, which will prevent your hair from frizzing up.

Hairspray: Annoying flyaways can be dealt with using an anti-frizz hairspray. Spritz on lightly - and you're done!

If these products seem overwhelming to you, there are also remedies you can make at home to help smoothen hair, such as ones with carbonated water, beer or coconut milk. Find what works for you and stick to it to see results!

Braids By Sarafina understands the importance of healthy hair, which is why we only install African braids on hair that hasn't been compromised. To install braids or remove them, visit us in Winston-Salem, NC anytime. Our African braiding styles include box braids, cornrows, Senegalese twists and more.

Classic Curls | How to Determine Curl Type - Ouidad

Classic curls have an undeniable coil shape that extends from roots to ends, typically resulting in a consistent and defined "S" shape. Typically the most uniform and healthy of all curl type, this curl pattern can become frizzy when disrupted and tighter when it is cut short. Dehydration or damage can rob this curl of it’s natural pattern, giving it the appearance of a looser curl.
